About:

Pre-school children can meet a range of our animals in this simple, sensory presentation.

They are encouraged to touch and stroke the animals, feeling new textures such as a strong shiny tortoise shell and a smooth, scaly snake.

We also talk about how animals can feel hurt or afraid, just the same as we do, and so we must treat them with care and respect.

Our school animal science workshops for EYFS are very sensory fun hands on experiences for younger pupils and complement the curriculum topic Understanding The World.

We offer three themes for our workshops:

1 - See It / Feel It

A practical, sensory experience introducing pupils to fascinating creatures with scales, fur or shells. The children are invited to guess what the different animals might feel like, and then compare this with their experience of actually touching them, and to think about how their senses might compare to how the animals feel things, and helps them to appreciate the importance of treating animals with care and respect.

2 - How does it move?

Children see at first-hand how a tortoise plods and a snake slithers, and then try moving in the same way. They will be prompted to think about how each animal’s way of moving plays a part in its adaptation to its environment.

3 - Caring for Animals

We discuss, in simple terms, why it is important to be kind to animals and protect the places where they live.

The children will meet a range of animals and mini-beasts and have the chance to touch and hold them. We explain how animals and people depend on each other and how important it is to keep our countryside, rivers and sea clean so that they can live there. We also talk about how animals can feel hurt or afraid, just the same as we do, and so we must treat them with care and respect.
