I Love Salsa have been teaching Latin Dance and Fitness in primary and secondary schools from key stage 1 – 5 as part of the PE Curriculum for 6 years. The I Love Salsa in Schools programme inspires young people not interested in sport to engage in exercise, increase fitness and tackle obesity. It also increases self-esteem, social skills and respect for others while developing memory function, social cohesion; and encourages boys to take part in dance.

Salsa dance lessons are taught by highly experienced and qualified dance teachers using a structured syllabus giving pupils the opportunity to express themselves through dance and physical activity as part of the PE curriculum. The I Love Salsa in Schools programme promotes diversity and cultural inclusion by encouraging understanding and respect between different cultures and celebrates their differences. Pupils of all ages can benefit from and experience the positive effects that salsa can have on their lives and physical well being.

The Salsa in Schools sessions encourage students to research the history of Latin culture, before discussing how salsa dance fits in to the rich and diverse culture. As part of the I Love Salsa family, there are many opportunities for individuals and schools to take part in The I Love Salsa Colours of the Rainbow Latin dance competition which takes place at the end of the school year. It is a culmination of all the hard work that students have put in during the year and is a chance to promote cultural diversity and integration between communities and faiths.  Another aim of our programme is to give students the opportunity to focus on an end product – to work together as a team to develop a performance or prepare for a competition or show.  Students have the opportunity ultimately to perform on the world stage as part of the IDF (International Dance Federation) World Championships which is being held in Italy in 2011 and the UK in 2012.   These competitions are a culmination of all the hard work that students have put in during the year and are a chance to promote cultural diversity and integration between communities and faiths.

Fire and the Laura,dance teacher who is currently coming to teach classes with him, have been brilliant. They really engage and enthuse the children because they communicate their love of dancing to them. Some of my staff were sceptical when we started Salsa but they have been amazed and how the children’s confidence and self esteem has grown. “Working with Fire was a fantastic experience because he was able to teach those of us that have never danced before as well as those that have experience.  He was patient, enthusiastic and choreographed a fantastic salsa routine. Over 5 weeks Fire brought us together as a dance team and we felt quite professional at the Carnival event – with costumes, a slick routine and Fire leading the way!
