We are an established company having delivered high quality workshops and events to schools, charities, councils and organizations for over five years. Our Ghanaian practitioners, arrive in national dress (just what we wear not a costume!) and we engage with students talking about our lives and taking questions as we teach the workshops. All our workshops introduce positive views of Africa and challenge stereotypes – sharing the diversity of the continent we love whilst allowing students to learn new things. We aim to inspire, educate and entertain! The workshops are unifying and fully inclusive, adapting to the differing abilities of those within the group. We do not contract out – all our workshop leaders are us! We are specialists within our field who hold current enhanced CRB checks and public liability insurance of £10million.
Drumming Workshops With 60 Djembes, additional drums and shakers Bakoji is able to take large groups. Connecting people through ‘Unity Rhythms’ drumming is inspiring, motivational and empowering and creates a sense of community. Call and response Song and Dance may also be used depending on timings, group size and ability. When deciding where to put us please remember that the drums are loud and too heavy to move between each session!
Dance This workshop requires two facilitators – a choreographer and a drummer. Traditional dance moves are accompanied by traditional beats – a workout for body and soul!
Craft
Bead and Mask Making – After an introduction to trade beads and/or masks from across West Africa, students use various techniques to make their own.
Recycled Toys – Goji guitars and cars from tin cans. Kites and balls from plastic bags. After exploring Ghanaian childrens’ ingenuity there is a chance to show your own.
Patchwork of Unity – Each individual uses a traditional print technique to create a cloth inspired by Adinkra symbols. These are then joined to create a patchwork. Adinkra Stamping, Batik, weaving and tie and dye can be used depending on the space, age and ability of students and time available. Unless you have materials available textiles has an additional materials charge of £1 per person.
Instrument making – Make a Kush Ka an African musical instrument made from gourds and seeds. Students may decorate their calabash using traditional techniques and Adinkra symbols. Goji guitars may also be made using recycled tin cans. Kush Ka production has an additional materials charge of £1 per person.
Food A quick run through of food stuff produced in Ghana for export and small tasters of non perishable traditional foods alongside the raw foods they are made from such as yam, plantain and cocoa pod. There is an additional charge of £1 per student. Should we buy local? What is Fairtrade?
