Paul Scragg - Deputy Head – Grassmoor Primary School

The children have worked and communicated co-operatively. They have challenged themselves and explored empathy. They have used drama to explore a subject. They have investigated evidence from several viewpoints to formulate an opinion. They have learnt about an historical figure. There have been benefits to the class while working collaboratively. There are a number of social issues in this class and it was good for the children to be challenged on these, for example, the tone of laughter and people deliberately not following the rules. They received lots of praise for succeeding socially. This has been a good day for English teaching. Many of our children have poor speaking and listening skills which affects their learning. There was lots of development of this and the thinking skills were necessary. Drama helped children understand the issues and empathise with the characters. The language and vocabulary were broadened and extended. This was absolutely a good way to learn about the First World War. Morals, rules, beliefs were different 100 years ago and the children had to experience this in order to understand, feel and therefore formulate an opinion as to right and wrong based on standards then and now.

I thought the day was excellent.
