About:

Earth Science Workshops: Investigate rocks, fossils and evolution in your own classroom through a series of NC-linked, hands-on and engaging activities. Find out what rocks are made of, how they change, and how their different properties make them vital to many aspects of our lives. Learn to “read the rocks” and discover what lived and grew in our own back gardens millions of years ago. Use the clues that scientists use to work out what the world was like in the deep past, and how the creatures of today evolved.

Workshops available are: “Rocks & Fossils” (KS2/3); “Adapt & Evolve” (KS2/3); “Go Mapping” (KS2/3) -  make your own geological map from real rocks; “Prehistoric Detectives” (Rec-Y4); “GeoChallenge” (Y5-adult, enrichment days), and “Palaeontology Puzzles” (Y5–adult, enrichment days).

Palaeoquest workshops are run by a PhD qualified Earth Scientist with 11 years experience of scientific research and 8 years working in Primary schools. A large number of rocks and fossils are available for pupils to handle and examine, as well as geological tools, maps, charts, microscopes, reconstructions and replicas.

“Work Scientifically” and apply existing skills to new challenges. Encourage teamwork and problem solving. Develop pupils’ observational and reasoning skills. Raise scientific awareness and promote cross-curricular links. Deepen pupils’ appreciation of the natural world.

Children work in groups, examining, observing, categorising and interpreting specimens, and solving real-life geological puzzles. There are whole-class discussions, questions, and feed-back, as well as some fun and games. Workshops are linked with National Curriculum topics, and also have a strong emphasis on problem-solving and applying existing skills to new challenges.

Earth Science is a unique and multidisciplinary science which encompasses elements of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Geography as well as being a vehicle for developing critical thinking and investigational skills and promoting environmental and outdoor education.
